Bosch DDB181-02 review

The DDB181-02 is a standard drill, it will work great for drilling in and removing screws in wood and similar materials. Some of its features have been broken down so we can understand this tool better.

COMPACTIBILTY
Compactibility, an important concern when professionals or non professionals make use of tools. How a tool fits into your hands can make your work look either like a professional or like a coloring book done by a 2 year old kid. It would look cute but i seriously doubt we want our job to look cute rather than to look professional. Thus the reason we like a tool to be really compactible. The DDB181-02 is a standard drill made to be very compactible. It allows for optimal handling both in tight and untight spaces making the job easier. This is the industries most compact drill/driver and is way more compact than many competitive drill/drivers in its category making it ideal for electricians, plumbers and HVAC tradesman looking for what can fit perfectly into their pouch and can also handle almost everyday task with 18-Volt power.


WEIGHT
It is also the lightest drill in its category produced by the manufacturers. The weight factor just like compactibility is also very important because It can have a direct impact on how long or short a particular task can be accomplished. Hey... nobody wants to work when they tired so why should I make use of a tool when I know before I say Jack Robinson most of the energy I have for that task is gone. With a weight of 3.0 lbs it has a nice balance. It is light enough and can be made use of perfectly by the females. It weighs 3.0 lbs without a battery and depending on which battery you use will change the weight. The slim pack weighs .34lbs and fat packs weigh 1.35lbs.


TORQUE AND SPEED
Has a torque speed of 350 in lbs for powerful drilling and 1300 RPM for fast drilling.


LED
Have you ever been using your drill and thought, hey... it would be really awesome if this had some sought of light to make this work better. With the LED light included in the tools creation turns on when you pull the trigger was placed in an awesome position which shows upward so it doesn't cast a shadow.


TWO SPEED TRANSMISSION
Having control of just how fast or slow something moves is pretty awesome. Comes with a variable
trigger giving you control over the speed with the use of the trigger. Its pretty awesome and it works very well and can be controlled even by someone that don't have alot of knowledge about how a drill/driver works. This can also optimize torque speed for screw driving and drilling.


POWER SOURCE
It is battery powered and is not supposed to be plugged in and be expected to work. If you working for long hours you can plug the second battery that comes with the kit so when the first becomes low you just switch the batteries so the work can go on.


VOLTAGE
It is an 18volt drill/driver. The DDB181 has a voltage rating of 120. If you intend to use a 220 voltage to charge the batteries you would need a step down transformer that would step down the voltage to 120 voltage in order for the charging to work. Attempting to charge on a 220 line can cause the unit to burn out.


BATTERY CELL TYPE
More and more these days manufacturers are making use of the lithium ion celled batteries and this
is no different. I talked a little about lithium ion batteries in my Makita XPH012 tool review. Also as long as the battery is a Bosch battery, Lithium-Ion, and 18-Volts , it can be used to power the tool. The bosch manufacturers make all their cordless products compactible with their battery platform. The new 5.0Ah and 6.0Ah batteries are also able to power the drill. The DDB181-02 comes with 2 1.5Ah batteries(watt hours 27) and they charge fairly quickly and last a long time. Also all of Bosch's 18v Lithium batteries no matter which generation will work with all of their 18v Lithium tools. It is best to use both batteries as the batteries age regardless if they are been used in the tool or just been kept somewhere. Lithium batteries do not have cell memory so they can be charged at any time. Also the batteries will hold their charge for up to 18 months when not in use. Be sure to unplug the charger when the battery is fully charged. It has 50/60 Hz rating.


BATTERY POWERED HOURS
This can depend on different variables to determine how long a battery would last, i.e. type of materials drilling into, speed/torque, how often you use the drill etc. On average a slim pack battery can last 1-3 hours and a fat pack battery 3-5 (or more) hours.


1/2 INCH DRILL DRIVER
Some drills have a 3/8 inch chuck whereas the Bosch DDB181-02 has a standard 1/2" 3 jaw chuck. This means that larger drill bits can be used giving you greater flexibilty. The chuck will hold drill bits from 1/16 - 3/8 shank size. It has an adjustable clutch setting built into the chuck.

WHAT NOT TO USE THE DRILL FOR

• We would not recommend using this drill/driver for dropping the supports to level a cramper.
• It is not adviced to use this tool to drill into cements. You will need a hammer drill for that. This is a nice tool for general purpose and would last long if used right.
• The DDB181 is a drill driver, it does not have enough torque to remove lug nuts.
• The Bosch DDB181 is a Drill/Driver only, it is not designed for drilling into concrete
• The tools in the DDB181-02 will not work for drilling 3 inch holes. The maximum size is 2" for bosch cordless tools. A corded drill would be the best for drilling 3 inch holes

The DDB181 has all metal gears. Four-pole high performance motor for maximum power in the most compact size. The DDB181 is not brushless.  Also has a 1 year warranty

Some pros and cons

1. It is light weight and also powerful
2. Has a 2 speed transmission which can adjusted to your taste
3. Not the best tool for heavy work is mostly used for home task
4. The tool can be nearly ineffective when the chuck starts to shake which makes any precise drill-work a futile effort.
