Makita XPH012 review

Today I am going to review the Makita XPH012 hammer drill-driver. This is a really great tool created by the makita manufacturers. The XPH012 can be run as a driver-drill or a hammer driver-drill and this makes it ideal for drilling into mansory, for driving fasteners which means you will not have to take more than one tool to the jobsite. The hammer mode can also be used on stubborn fasteners. The features of this tool are extensive and I will be going through them today.

Pole motor and Torque
Makita built 4-pole motor delivers 480 in Ibs. of Max Torque.Generally DC motors have 2 magnetic poles, 4-pole DC motors has 4 magnetic pole. This difference in number can be significant in the way a tool functions. Most drills functioning with 4 pole motors are better than those with 2 pole motors. The 4 pole motors has higher efficiency of energy consumption. The 4 pole drill motors delivers faster power in a compact size. The built 4-pole motor delivers max torque than the previous
version.Another reason why we like the 4-pole motor is that it does not easily wear off making it to last longer.

If your drill should go bad and needs fixing and it is discovered that the pole motor also needs fixing , the 4-pole motors are readily more available. In smaller size equipment such as the drill/driver the 4 pole motor are more powerful. In using a drill the weight of the drill often determines how long or how efficient we are able to work and with manufacturers realizing this they utilize pole motors which are lighter and smaller which is another place the 4 -pole motor comes in in making the drill
more suitable for use. Therefore generally the 4-pole motor delivers higher torque than the 2-pole motor.

Variable 2-speed design
Control is key in everything and been able to determine how fast or how slow a tool works is magnificent. With the 0-400 & 0-1,500 RPM(which is the rotation per minute) that comes with this makita tool we are able to do just that. This can give us a wide range of drilling, driving and hammer drilling applications making it a more efficient tool.
The 500rpm is higher than the 400rpm and we can adjust this so the drill can match the right speed needed for the job. The more or higher rmp can be used for drilling operations like drilling holes while the slower or lesser rmp can be used with more torque for driving screws.

Compact and ergonomic design
The design of a tool can make a task more comfortable than you think. The Makita XPH012 has been designed to have a shape that fits into the hand like a glove to reduce the operator's fatigue. It was designed perfectly to have a small shape in compact size which is close and firm to the hands when gripped. With a 8-1/8" handle length not too long and not too short makes it very suitable when held during use.

Weight
The weight an a tool can be really important if you spend a lenghty time drilling. With the battery included the Makita XPH012 weighs only 4.0 lbs. which reduces the operators fatigue making for longer and smoother working hours. Due to this light weight operators are able to do work in tight spaces that cannot be reached if we are making use of heavier hammer drills. With the light weight and the shape designed to fit into the hand like a glove it is known to feel great. It can also be used by either hands comfortably and also do a perfect job. It is also known to be important for tough jobs.

Lithium ion Batteries
This tool is a battery powered source and uses lithium ion batteries. Compared to other common batteries it charges faster,it last longer and it also has a higher power density for more battery life. It also makes charging easier. They are known to be smaller in size and lighter in weight than a nickel cadmium battery or nickel metal hydride battery. When charged they do not self discharge and can therefore be stored for months without losing charge and they can also recharge in as little as minutes. The battery power has a voltage rating of 120v. This means you are not suppose to use a voltage higher than this to charge the battery. One popular question about the Makita batteries is how long does the batteries last?? The best answer to this is that the battery life on average for most customers
vary depending on the type of work you subject the tool to. But one thing I can assure you is that it is way better than other batteries like the Ni-cad batteries. The lithium ion batteries though are the best batteries have a tendency to die quickly when used in the drills most powerful mode but with this defect comes the ability to recharge pretty fast(below 30minutes). Also another way to reduce this burden is to purchase another battery. With this even with the drill working at its best mode you
can get more work done.

Volt power
As we all know higher volts indicate higher power and when getting a drilling tool we are to obtain one with reasonable voltage. Therefore with a 18 power volts we can expect to drill into harder surfaces. It delivers more power and longer run time and is perfect for fastening screws and drilling holes. It is seriously adviced not to plug this tool to a higher voltage than specified because this can damage your tool. I plan on writing an article about ways to make your drill last longer. When I do I would link this article to it. Another reason many customers have given possible review about this tool is the keyless chuck which holds the bits very well.

Hammer drill driver
Built with a hammer and drill mode the Makita XPH012 is more efficient. With the choice of been able to switch to either modes, the hammering mode is ideal for drilling into mansory which includes cement, bricks and similar materials and the driver drill for driving fasterners. Although it is a hammer drill/driver, its hammer mo is not as powerful as the main hammer drills.

Star Protection Computer Controls
Star Protection Computer Controls a development by the Makita's team is a technology that allows the tool and the battery to communicate with each other by monitoring conditions and exchanging data in real time to protect against excessive loading, excessive discharging and excessive heating. More actual work requires max battery power. The Makita's team engineered their tools and batteries for these sought of applications. But when a tool is used to its limit it can result in overload of the
tool. The Makita's Star Protection Computer Controls makes it possible for the battery and the tool to communicate thereby protecting your tool and battery from overload by cutting power when put under abnormal current draw.

Running a battery until it is drained to 0% can damage the cells of the battery. The Makita Star Protection Computer Controls monitors battery charge capacity and it cuts the power in order to extend the battery life if the battery is too low to complete the application.

Extreme heat can reduce the charging time of batteries, damage battery cells and cut short battery lifes but with the makita star protection computer controls the power to the tool is cut off if the battery reaches a certain level of heat. Tools without the makita star protection computer controls generate heat when hot so it is advised that when this starts happening to give the tool some rest in other for it to cool down before making use of it.

The XPH012 is also equipped with a built-in L.E.D.(light-emitting diode) light with afterglow which brightens the work area making it easier to see while drilling in areas with poor lighting.

To cover a wide range of drilling and driving applications. With 0-6,000 Blows Per Minute (BPM) in low and 0-22,500 BPM in high, it is ideal for drilling into masonry and concrete.

Rubberized soft grip
Manufactured with a rubberized soft grip the tool was created to increase comfort during the job.

Gear construction
With an all metal gear construction the tool provides increased durability (durability means the ability to withstand wear, pressure, or damage). This also prevents internal parts from moving. Some manufacturer's tools are dropped from heights of 6 to 12 feet onto concrete floors during production to test the durabilty of the tools (tools with good or increased durablilty are able to withstand such impacts).Typical hammer drills produce loads of vibrations which can reduce users comfort affecting tools efficiency and manufacturers of makita tools have taken this into consideration and they have created systems in their tools to increase user comfort without affecting the tools efficiency.

Rapid Optimum Charger
The rapid Optimum Charger interacts with the battery's built in chip during charging to maximize the battery life by controlling and monitoring the current, voltage and temperature. It also comes with a built in fan to cool the battery for faster, more efficient charging. The charger that comes with this kit will charge all Makita 18V slide style batteries.

All Makita armatures are balanced to two times the industries standard, giving Makita the finest balanced motor armature available to ensure long life with less vibrations.

Positive remarks
- It has a 2 speed gear box.
- It has a light weight and due to the Lithium-ion powered batteries charges fast(30min)
- It has a lot of torque speed and can be adjusted easily
- The chuck is easy to tighten and release
- LED light keeps work area well lit
- Features Star Protection Computer Controls to prevent
  overheating, overloading, and over discharging

One thing that bothers me about this this product is due to the fact that the battery runs out without any warning and also there is no charge indicator on either the tool or the battery and also the chuck can sometimes have a tendency to shake at high speeds

Items that come in the kit on purchase
1. Battery charger
2. A case
3. One battery
4. One hammer drill/driver
5. A manual
6. A belt clip

One thing to note is that the kit does not come with drill bits or screw bits you have to purchase these
separately.
The hammer drill/driver has a 3years warranty and 1- year warranty on the battery.

The Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Hammer Driver-Drill delivers adaptability and very good performance when in use. It can suit your need for either a driver drill or a hammer driver drill therefore allowing the user to carry just one tool to the jobsite instead of 2. The Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge time in their categories so the tool spends more time working and less charging. I really like this tool but my advice is that you would actually
need 2 batteries for any serious work and also if you are not a really serious user you don't need to purchase this drill you can save alot of money by going for a cheaper drill to fit your needs.
